At the beginning of March Amanda Booth Hancocks Georg Jensen buyer had the privilege of being invited to a rare peak behind the scenes of Georg Jensen based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The tour started with a rarely available tour of the famous Georg Jensen Smithy workshops where Amanda was able to observe the master silversmiths at work. They create the Georg Jensen masterpieces that are hand hewn and can take up to a year to complete an intricate piece. As beautifully demonstrated in Amanda’s video of the Silversmith hard at work.
Next on the itinerary was a visit was to the Georg Jensen Archives. Usually kept as a mystery to the general public they contain original sketches and designs by their now famous designers such as Georg Jensen himself, Henning Koppel and Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe. A glass wall hung cabinet is shown which was originally the start of the Georg Jensen retail empire! Georg hung the small cabinet outside his home at the start of his career to showcase his very first designs.
Amanda had the unique pleasure to be allowed to view Vivianna’s original and now a stand out and universally recognised Dew Drop collar and pendant designs amongst other archived pieces such as the Splash design which is rumoured to be the latest collection to be re born from the archives. Amongst the Archives dating back to the opening of his business in 1904 are some of his most iconic designs in silverware.
Onwards to the present day and the next stop was the Georg Jensen Headquarters where Amanda had the honour to meet the CEO Francesco Pesci and hear a presentation from him highlighting new strategies and products that will take the company forward into the future with some exciting news so keep an eye open on our social media or sign up to Subscribe to our newsletter where you will receive regular news and updates.
A short walk away is the Georg Jensen flagship store at Amagertorv, Copenhagen. Amanda was given an insight into how the Danish do it! Newly refurbished to the highest standards the store showcases Danish design at its utmost best. Walking through heavenly displays of homewares, tableware and gifts. Taking in the breath-taking designs of Fusion, Offspring, Magic and Daisy and the dazzling array of Watches for her and Watches for him.
Upon her day of return Amanda left Denmark feeling inspired and with a far greater knowledge and understanding of what makes Georg Jensen tick and a thoroughly good time was had by all.
